Anantara Tozeur offers a Tatooine Journey in Tunisia

Just opened in the southwest of Tunisia, 5-star-superior Anantara Tozeur Resort offers a luxury gateway to the mystical Sahara Desert and its breathtaking natural landscapes.

Fans of the epic Star Wars space trilogies created by George Lucas, which reach their conclusion this December with the final film’s chapter, will be very familiar with some of these panoramas, as the southern Tunisian desert around Tozeur served as the filming locations for numerous scenes from the Star Wars movies.

Anantara Tozeur: Noble luxury retreat

In the noble luxury retreat, an 80 million US dollar project of the Thai Minor Hotel Group, 93 rooms, suites and villas as well as several pools await the guests. The noble Arabic design harmonises perfectly with the Tunisian culture of the picturesque town of Tozeur, at the gates of which lies the luxury hotel with a view of date palm groves and the seemingly endless salt lake Chott el Djerid.

„Our goal is to deliver top quality in everything we do here”, explains Lotfi Mosbehi, the General Manager of Anantara Tozeur during an interview in his office. Mosbehis son is currently studying in Frankfurt, Germany. The hotel manager deliberately chose Germany as a study country for his son. The Germans are „always disciplined, always straight ahead, always working”, he enthuses. The GM, who lives in the hotel complex, likes this attitude because he has to be „on site 24 hours a day”. And as if to confirm, his mobile phone rings incessantly during our conversation. Someone always wants something from him.

The boss of Anantara Tozeur

The boss of Anantara Tozeur Resort also expects discipline, friendliness, „smiles” and concentrated work from the staff. Because the selection of suitable personnel in the south-west of Tunisia is not as easy as in Europe, there would be „day and night training, training, training” for the employees. „We want to improve the service, every day. I am a man of quality. I like quality, and I want to offer that to my guests. The guests work very hard all year round and when they come to spend a week or two here, I want to make their stay as pleasant as possible”. And that includes very high quality. And a „big smile to all guests”.

“Quality in everything we do here… and a big smile to all guests”

After a visit to the famous medina of Tozeur and an extensive walk through the tumultuous alleys of the city of 35,000 inhabitants, the in-house Anantara Spa is an ideal place to relax. In the spacious wellness area with six treatment rooms, visitors can expect a clever combination of Arabic healing rituals, signature treatments that have their origins in ancient Tunisian culture, traditional hammam and exotic Thai spa. Floodlit tennis courts, a fitness club with yoga studio, a ballroom, business centre and conference rooms for MICE organisers and the Dunes Kids Club complete the offer.

Vitit iconic filming locations

Now fans and guests at Anantara Tozeur Resort also have the opportunity to visit some of the iconic filming locations from the first and second trilogies, when they book the resort’s „Tatooine Journey Package“.

The Tunisian location near Nefta, from where the fictional planet of “Tatooine” took its name, is located just a few hours away from the resort. Even closer is the site of one of Tatooine’s spaceport settlements which was featured in Episodes One and Two. On route guests drive through the spectacular landscapes of Ong Jemel, ‘the neck of the camel’ in Tunisian, which served as the setting for more scenes from Episode One.

Traveling through the charming town of Tozeur and on to the mountains in the north west, guests also have the opportunity to visit Mides Canyon, seen in the original trilogy. After visiting the stunning canyon, stop briefly at the village of Chebika and the mountain oasis of Tamerza where a waterfall and the option of some refreshments await. Then venture onward and into the Chott el Djerid, the largest salt lake in the Sahara Desert, its vast endless panoramas also recognizable from the original trilogy.

For those fans who would like some photographic memories from their Tozeur desert experiences, there is the option to don a cape and laser sword at the nearby film set, to create some truly memorable shots in the iconic, and an instantly recognizable, backdrop.
