The Ameron Swiss Mountain Hotel in Davos

The Rhaetian Railway train twists and turns along an impressive route from Landquart to Klosters and through the Graubündner Mountains up to Davos. Minute by minute the landscape comes whiter and more wintry during our journey, until the train finally reaches its destination at an altitude of 1560 m; the snow-covered train station at Davos. From there, it’s a five minute bus ride and then we are standing in front of the new and elegant four-star plus Ameron Swiss Mountain Hotel in the centre of Davos. As soon as we enter the lobby and after a first glance, we know that we have arrived at the right place.

Inside there is relaxed activity. On the left at reception, there are two young and friendly Front-Office Managers waiting to greet us. On the right, a couple of guests seated in a cosy couch corner are hatching plans for a mountain snow hike. And in the midst of it all a stylishly clad blonde lady, dressed in black and grey hues, hurries across the corridor to greet guests at the neighbouring ‚Bar Lounge’, aka the living room of the hotel. Later on we find out that this charming and modest lady from Germany is in actual fact, the hotel’s manager Silvana Schlösser, who runs the hotel together with her husband Ingo.

The Schlössers are not new to hotels. They have been responsible for several Swiss four and five-star hotels such as, The Dolder Grand in Zürich and have been part of the Ameron Mountain Hotel in Davos from the very beginning. They documented the final year of building and up until the official opening on 1st December 2015 in their pre-opening blog.

The original location of the hotel; in the area known as Holland House, was occupied by the „Nederlands Astmacentrum Davos“. A sanatorium for patients with lung disorders and which later moved to Clavadel. In 2013 the old building was completely demolished and shortly afterwards work started on the hotel of today.

Divided onto four floors, the Ameron Swiss Mountain Hotel Davos has over 148 rooms and suites, all with generous balconies and a wonderful view of the mountains. Our room, on the fourth floor, is tastefully furnished in a modern yet not over the top Swiss style.

The view from our balcony makes you feel as though you are in the heart of the city. You cannot get more central in Davos. The Congress Centre, where the famous yearly World Economic Summit takes place, is only a few minutes away on foot. The most important lift stations that take you to the ski slopes Jakobshorn, Parsenn, Rinerhorn and Schatzalp/Strela are all easily accessible with the local bus (which is free with the Davos guest card). The next bus stop is only a few steps away from the hotel. And to get to the Davos cross-country ski trail, it is little more than five minutes along the river.

From a very broad and impressively comfortable bed the snowy mountaintops seem within reach. Like many of the spaces of the hotel, the bedrooms are also decorated in warm earthy tones, combined with furs and blankets, paintings and photographs. The parquet floor is foot friendly as well as the tiles in the bathroom, which emit the warmth of the floor heating. Recycled wood, slate, walls in stone optic and warm colours which can be found everywhere from the hotel lobby to the Bar Lounge. We spent many an evening in that bar, drinking one or two nightcaps, resting in an extremely cosy, heavy and soft chair – served by a very competent and friendly bar team Peter Wienecke and Isabel Kache and entertained by fine lounge-jazz sounds. On those occasions, we found it more than difficult to get up and leave our cocoon of cosy idleness.

What we remember:

The Ameron Swiss Mountain Hotel Davos was the missing piece of the puzzle. Generous rooms, tastefully furnished, modern design, central but also a relaxing location with a wonderfully spacious ‚Vitality Spa’ wellness area. A place where active holidaymakers as well as solace seekers, business travellers and congress visitors are made to feel happy and comfortable.

The hotel is like a rejuvenating cure for Davos. You won’t find Swiss alpine kitsch here, nor will you notice any sign of a clinical past as in some other hotels in the area. The whole hotel consists of a feel-good atmosphere, which also includes the friendliness of the staff. A special mention to the Bar Lounge team and Mrs. Schlösser of course. The charming lady-boss of the hotel who took the opportunity to drive us personally to the train station on our departure, where the Rhaetian Railway was waiting for us to take us back on an impressive adventure through the snowy mountains. Another reason to return. In summer maybe? Yes – we’ll come back! To the Ameron Mountain Hotel Davos.
