Next door to Merkel: 4-Star Superior Hotel Steigenberger am Kanzleramt in Berlin
Angela Merkel’s office is just around the corner. It is impossible to find an accommodation that is closer to the political center of power in Berlin. Directly vis-a-vis the Bundestag, with views on the Federal Chancellery, the Reichstag building and the Paul-Loebe-House, the Steigenberger Hotel Group opened the four-star superior hotel “Steigenberger am Kanzleramt” (Steigenberger at the chancellery) in May 2014. The address “Willy-Brandt-Strasse 1, 10557 Berlin” – the heart of Germany’s government district – is only three minutes walk far away: The location of Merkel’s Chancellery that gave Steigenberger’s new First Class Hotel it’s name.
First impression after my arrival in the lobby: Dignified elegance, pleasant colors, cozy armchairs, outstanding charming service at the front desk. One example: The staff couldn’t find my reservation first. My mistake: I travelled too early to Berlin – after so many trips visiting so many hotels all over Germany, my appointment schedule was a bit messed up. Luckily, that was no problem for the friendly staff at Steigenberger am Kanzleramt hotel: it was their pleasure to make me happy (and to calm me down) by offering an upgrade. So I could spend the night in a Junior Suite at the top floor, with a perfect view at the government district.
My room is elegantly furnished, the bathroom spacious. Coffee and tea making facilities as well as free internet connection are just a few of the amenities awaiting my arrival at my suite. The bed is equipped with a wonderful mattress (very important for my pained back!). The large panoramic windows provide an impressive view at the main railway station on the left, the center of the capital in the middle and the Reichstag building on the right.

The unobtrusive color composition of heavy, but bright window curtains, the dark bedspread on white pillows and sheets, the red chair at the desk, the design-lamp at the window and the subtle lighting over the bed provide a very pleasant atmosphere. Outside on the streets it’s hussle and bussle – here in my suite it’s cozy and quiet.
In addition to the 339 rooms and suites, the hotel provides a very nice lounge next to the lobby, worth visiting even if you do not stay here. The two-story high lounge is dominated by orange, lilac, yellow and purple cozy wing chairs, cleverly arranged in groups to offer some intimacy, flanked by an enormous LED light wall with iridescent colors and an impressive sweeping staircase, that leads to the upper gallery. The conference section covers an area of more than 2,000 m² on two floors. The main hall with its two foyers — perfect for presentations and exhibitions capable to host up to 400 participants is based on the ground floor, while the conference area with its 10 further meeting rooms is to be found directly above. Lobby and lounge are a perfect place to assemble and start excursions. The hotel bar next door with extremely friendly and capable staff is the perfect location for completing the day’s enjoyment.
A Day Spa with astonishing views from the top (7th) floor of the Hotel offers sauna, steam bath, a private spa, massage, beauty treatments and access to a modern and fully equipped gym. Perfect for relaxing and having a rest after a long day in the city or on the plane.

The “Steigenberger am Kanzleramt” is not only ideal for business travelers who have appointments in the nearby government district, but also for sightseeing tourists who want to stay centrally located near the main train station and want to explore the city by foot. For example, the government district with the Federal Chancellery that gave its name to this hotel.
